Paranoia on Instagram or Plot Against Facebook?

.

Is this the War of the Worlds 2.0?

Some of you could think that because I´m the founder of Instagramers, I have a vested interest on Instagram and its application. Let me reassure you, it is not the case.

Instagram is my “hobby” and as it is the case with most hobbies, they should only bring you positive vibes and great satisfactions. Today I must admit that I am getting a great deal of satisfaction with the possibility I have to contrast my thoughts with the views of thousands of instagram´s fans (and some “journalists” …) that have declared war (mainly via Instagram and Twitter) against last Instagram privacy and terms update.

Reading to some newspaper, I would say that we are not so far from the paranoia provoked by “The War of the Worlds” and its adaptation in a famous 1938´s radio show by Orson Welles.

Wells shook America in 1938 when he suggested to many listeners that an actual alien invasion by Martians was currently in progress. Today, a young American journalist publishes an “Instagram says it now has the right to sell your photos” and immediately other journalists (not really keen on understanding Instagram Privacy Rules) follow through with the same and alarming tragic tone and information (and articles titles).

¿Paranoia on Instagram or Plot against Facebook?

You may think that my “Plot against Facebook” Theory is, in itself, a Paranoia. But think about it for a minute. Do you really believe Instagram will sell your photos?  To me it´s a new version of  “War of the Worlds 2.0”, a “War of the Worlds 2.0”..

Our young American journalist has become the new “Orson Welles for a Day” and his mother must be very proud. He has managed to have half Instagram world mulling over the future of Internet, our privacy, our datas security, our pictures ownership and making their own predictions on future Facebook, Instagram, Twitter strategies.

.

Thanks god, there are journalists (and bloggers) out there that are keen on checking facts before publishing their thoughts in this 2012´s apocalyptic end. As stated at Spanish ElMundo.es  “The changes do not affect the ownership of the photos or who can see them. Users will still own their snapshots and will be able to control who can see them. In addition, users can still make the decision whether to publish your photos on Facebook or not. “

.

The recent purchase of Instagram by Facebook required some changes on the legal field too. These changes were mandatory and necessary. especially if Instagram  wants to be reliable and show advertising, it has to be able to protect itself against fierce American Laws in terms of privacy and ownership and future users potential trials.

.

I could spend hours talking about it but people usually do not like to read Terms of Use and long posts neither.  So remember, Facebook and Instagram are not stupid! They will not kill goose that laid the golden eggs! Mark Zuckerberg is not going to throw away 1 billion dollars.

Added December, 19th : See Kevin Systrom explanation of the new Terms Of Service on Instagram (TOS) HERE!

 .

All this is a bit exaggerated … Why?

.

Maybe someone has stake in shaking Facebook’s hegemony in social networks?

Facebook is an annoying and uncomfortable piece on the chess to other large Internet companies. Some of them failed in their desires to purchase it. Or how about other big players that also showed interest in purchasing Instagram recently? (Like Google). Paranoia or Plot?

.

Hope I’m wrong but to all my friends that today appeal to “unity, or motivate their friends to the defection of Instagram“, or “let´s remove your pics and move to  Em Eye ….

I may say them … “Yessssss! Please run away to Eye Em” If you like adventure!

And in a few months, we will talk ..

But before you go, allow me to give you a last word of advice.  Please read your “other social networks privacy rules”, Youtube, Twitter, and your electrical compagnies terms or your insurance.

.

And of course dont forget to read Eye Em Legal terms  green new land. (see below)!

.

In conclusion I would add that, a few days ago, while I was in London, I talked with the owner of a major “stock photo compagny”. he told me that, today the average selling price of a picture could be about a 0.20 to 0.30 cents in euros / photo. Of course, he was talking mainly about photos taken by professionals … What Instagram would do with your photos taken with a mobile “even if artistic”?

.

Let´s come back to the earth. The land where we live. The land that, in 1938, millions of Americans believed that Martians were going to invade.
