InstaDogma, the dogmatic aspects of Instagram

.

We had been talking about throwing contests and all sorts of happenings for some time, and finally @elakkanin made us think of the dogmatic aspects of Instagram –  and we evolved that thinking into a whole manifest inspired by DOGMA 95 by film directors Lars von Trier and Thomas Vinterberg (full manifest found here ).

Different from the background and purpose of DOGMA 95, we are overwhelmed and inspired by the talent in the Instagram community, and the vast amount of personal styles and image editing capabilities. Many Instagram artists really create new worlds of imagery, and we all enjoy the diversity that Instagram offers, and is a vessel for.

Similar to DOGMA 95 we are interested in exploring the aspects of photography and reality in the moment, here and now, and which results we come up with individually, and as a group, from limiting our possibilities of expression applying ten rules, or DOGMA, introducing the #instadogma “VOW OF CHASTITY”:

.

What´s the Dogma definition?

.
1.The camera must be the native camera in the Instagram application installed on a hand-held smartphone (iPhone or Android). The picture must be taken hand-held.

.
2.The picture must be in color, with the Normal filter applied. Special lighting is not acceptable (if there is too little light for exposure the picture must be disregarded, or the built-in flash on the smartphone must be used).

.
3.Optical work and filters are forbidden.

.
4.Genre pictures are not acceptable.

.
5.Shooting the picture must be done on location.

.
6.Shooting the picture must take place where the action takes place. People and objects must not be lured to pose or act in front of the camera.

.
7.Props and sets must not be brought in. If a particular prop is necessary for the picture, a location must be chosen where this prop is to be found.

.
8.The picture must not contain superficial action (murders, weapons, etc. must not occur).

.
9.Temporal and geographical alienation are forbidden; The picture must be uploaded immediately to Instagram, and if geotagged, with the actual location (if having roaming problems pictures may be uploaded at a later time, under the condition that information about the actual time stamp and location is stated in the Caption).

.
10.The picture must be tagged #instadogma and posted on the photographer’s own account and photo stream.

Furthermore I swear as an instagramer to refrain from personal taste. I am no longer an artist. I swear to refrain from creating a “work”, as I regard the instant as more important than the whole. My supreme goal is to force the truth out of my surrounding characters and settings. I swear to do so by all the means available and at the cost of any good taste and any aesthetic considerations.

Instameet Malmoe Recap:

.

Yesterday, Saturday, June 2nd, in spite of hailstorms and rain, a fairly small group of enthusiasts met in Malmö, Sweden. Sweden was represented by @elakkanin, @littleelakkanin, @robe, @mariesamne, @manowar75, @ehrenstrale, and @svartrutan, and Denmark sent their finest @cirkeline and @bobbyanwar. Although most uf us found it scary to embrace the INSTADOGMA manifest, we did, and many of us found it to be truly interesting and liberating, challenging our own personal creativity and taste. As a result, our little group uploaded no less than 276 pictures on the #instadogma tag, and 225 pictures on the tag of the day #instawalkmalmoe_02062012.

We strongly recommend anyone to try #instadogma, and for an instameet it is a really rewarding theme.

Although applying optics and filters and post processing in many ways is the essence of Instagram, a completely different kind of creativity is explored in INSTADOGMA. (check #InstaDogma gallery)
