giftThe Jury has voted, our followers have been heard and the winner for igersMauritius #photooftheyear 2012 is @garethpon who walks away with a Blackberry Playbook.
.
.
We somehow knew this user was special, he brings a different vision of Mauritius, his way of shooting and post-production skills that inspire a lot of people in our igers community.
.
No surprises that he was our September #spotlightofthemonth (a recognition that we give to one of our followers for his contribution, promotion of the island and inspiration to others).
 .
Just a few words about the process to pick the photo that we think deserves to the #photooftheyear.
First we put together an amazing jury:
.
– Philippe Gonzalez, founder instagramers.com & more… @philgonzalez
– Nishan Joomun, local manager of igersMauritius (@nishan_)
– Luca Anania, founder of wegram.com  & #photooftheday
– Beachcomber Group, one of the best hotel chain on the island
– DefiMedia Group, Local Media & Newspaper
– Khatleen Minerve, Local photograph published in Vogue Italia
– 1 seat representing our followers
We ask them to submit their TOP5 from a list of 20 pictures, who were 2-3 best shots for each month based on the number of “likes” they received on instagram. You can find the list here http://alturl.com/i5jzj. Our followers voted via instagram and facebook then the number of “likes” helped me build their TOP5. Finally a point-based system was used to compile the votes where the No.1 gets 7pts; No.2 gets 4pts; No.3 gets 3pts…)
Below you will see the 5 best shots of 2012
.
1 – @garethpon winner with 27pts
2 – @rdespeville 18 pts
3 – @olalaliv 11pts
4 – @kates10 10pts (with better number of likes)
5 – @shanemilleryeah 10pts

I believe the result is great keeping in mind that those guys are amateur and when you think it’s coming from Mauritius, small island in the Indian Ocean where having a smartphone is more the privileged because it’s crazy expensive and the mobile/4G/3G/WIFI networks still need a lot of improvement. But it’s looking very promising from what I saw during my visit in December.
Thanks to the success of igersMauritius, I’m happy to say that we were able to get some agreements/deals with @beachcomber_hotels who will contribute to our monthly prizes and MTPA (Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority) will promote us via their own social network and site, as well as giving us access to their media library compiled by PRO. photographers, producers and artists. Our facebook page is proving to be a nice surprise as well, we are about to hit 14,000.
2013 looks very promising for igerMauritius, our daily #photooftheday will of course continue and our monthly winner will get some more exiciting prizes. Soon we will launch our main site which will help people who doesn’t have access to smartphone or 3G/4G to still contribute and participate.

That is misleading. Out of the top 5, 3 are non-Mauritians (tourists).
