Ai Futaki, born in Japan, Two Guinness World Record holder of freediving, is one of the very few people in the world who conveys the splendors of the sea to us in various ways. Ai started competitive swimming when she was just 3 years old. When she discovered freediving, it was a life changing revelation for her. Being in the water like marine mammals, it is the best way to express the subaquatic world.

Ai Futaki nació en Japón. Posee dos récords mundiales Guinness de apnea. Es una de las pocas personas que nos transmita los esplendores del mar desde diferentes enfoques. Ai comenzó la natación en competición con tan solo 3 años. La apnea, fue como una revelación que le cambió la vida. Para ella, estar en el agua como un mamífero marino es la mejor forma de mostrar el mundo subacuático.

How would you describe yourself in one phrase?

¿Cómo te describirías en una frase?
Positiva

When did you take your first photograph?
When I was little.. like 4 or 5 years old… I took a photo of my grand parents.

¿Cuando hiciste tu primera fotografía?
Cuando era chiquita, a los 4 o 5 años, tal vez. Me acuerdo que retraté a mis abuelos.

When did you feel the sea was calling you?
Always. Without noticing it, I was always looking for the sea and water in general, all my life.

¿Cuando sentiste la llamada del mar?
Siempre me atrajó el mar. Sin darme cuenta, busqué el mar y el agua toda mi vida.

What is the most beautiful place on earth that you have visited?
What I always feel is.. the world is connected by the sea and there is beauty in everything. I don’t like to compare, so I find interest in what nature gives me.

¿Cuál es el sitio más bonito que hayas visitado en el mundo?
Lo que siento siempre es que el mundo está conectado por el mar y hay belleza en todo. No me gusta comparar, así que encuentro interés en lo que me ofrece la naturaleza.

What is the most fascinating you have been able to photograph?
Sea mammals. I feel them closer to us, because we are mammals too! I can see their emotions through their eyes, through their movements, etc.

¿Qué es lo más fascinante que has podido fotografiar?
Lo más fascinante son los mamíferos marinos. Los siento muy parecidos y cercanos a nosotros, ¡Porque somos mamíferos también! Puedo sentir sus sentimientos y emociones a través de sus ojos, de sus movimientos, etc.

How do you get wild animals to be photographed with a human being?
Since “underwater” is their home, I enter with respect. If you respect them, they will also respect you too. It’s just like with people, right?

¿Cómo consigues que los animales salvajes se dejan fotografiar con un humano?
Como que “bajo del agua” es su casa, entro con respecto; cuando vas con respecto, ellos te respetan también a ti. Es igual que con la gente, verdad?

Do you have any dreams left to fullfil? Or any animal in particular that you’d like to photograph?
There are so many! I would like to go to the Antarctic; it would be my big dream. Interact and photograph with large marine mammals such as Blue Whales, Sperm Whales and I can’t miss the Belugas!

¿Te queda algún sueño por realizar? ¿O algún animal en particular por fotografiar?
¡Hay tantos! Me gustaría ir al océano Antártico. Seria mi gran sueño. Interactuar y fotografiar con grandes mamíferos marinos tales como las Ballenas Azules o los Cachalotes ¡Y no me perdería las Belugas!

Who are your favorite photographers?
Isabel Muñoz. I have learned a lot from her. I am passionate about how she captures the “magic” moment!

Isabel Muñoz. He aprendido mucho de ella. ¡Me apasiona como capta el momento “mágico”!

I like to go and “search” without searching … and see what there is!

Me gusta ir a “buscar” sin buscar.. ¡y ver qué hay!

Tell us something more on your documentary.
It is my message. I do what I do to share that we are part of this blue planet… We must find a way so that we can all live together with respect; Nature, Animals, we humans.

Háblanos de tu documental.
Es mi mensaje. Hago lo que hago para compartir que somos parte de este planeta azul… Hay que buscar la manera para que todos podemos vivir juntos con respecto; Naturaleza, Animales, nosotros humanos.

Can you tell us more on your upcoming proyects?
More than ever, I feel the importance of sending and sharing the message from underwater. Although we cannot see the direct connection, we are all connected. Without the sea, we cannot breathe, nor eat or have clothes… Well, this would be in very general, but my projects are to share Co-Existence.

¿Nos puedes hablar de tus próximos proyectos?
Más que nunca, siento la importancia de mandar y compartir la mensaje desde bajo del agua. Aunque no podemos ver la conexión directa, todos estamos conectados. Sin mar, no podemos respirar, ni comer, ni tener ropa… Bueno, seria muy en general, pero mis proyectos son para compartir Co-Existencia.
