It all started with 12 minutes commuting and 12 minutes back home in the railway, to express his creativity. Today he has more than 23,000 followers on Instagram. He makes prints, designs shop windows, magazines and books covers, clothes, drawings for advertising campaigns and gives classes and lettering workshops so that people learn how to express their creativity with fun.

Todo empezó con 12 minutos de ida al trabajo y 12 minutos de vuelta a casa en un tren de cercanías, para expresar su creatividad. Hoy en día cuenta con más de 23.000 seguidores en Instagram. Realiza láminas, además de diseñar escaparates, portadas de revistas y libros, diseños de ropa, dibujos para campañas publicitarias e imparte clases y talleres para animar a la gente a desarrollar su creatividad y se divierta con el lettering.

Who is Alfredo Garcia-Almonacid Fuentes?

Alfredo García is the person behind Dirty Harry. A very normal person, 45 years old (since just a few days), who lives in Madrid, who above all loves music, playing on weekends with his group Clint, and who also enjoys photography, cinema and art.

¿Quién es Alfredo Garcia-Almonacid Fuentes?

Alfredo García es la persona que hay detrás de Dirty Harry. Una persona de lo más normal, con 45 años recién cumplidos hace unos días, que vive en Madrid, al que le encanta sobre todo la música, tocar los fines de semana con Clint, su banda, y que también disfruta de la fotografía, el cine, el arte.

What do you do on a daily basis?

My day to day life does not have to do a lot with lettering, since I work as a “Brand Guardian” in a company, where I am responsible for everything related to the brand guidelines and its evolution in the different countries where it operates. It is a job that is not very creative like lettering, but I am passionate about everything related to branding, and I am lucky to work with it.

¿A qué te dedicas en el día a día?

Mi día a día está bastante alejado del lettering, ya que trabajo como “Brand Guardian” en una empresa, donde soy el responsable de todo aquello relacionado con la marca, y su evolución en los diferentes países donde esta opera. Es un trabajo que no es muy creativo como el lettering, pero me apasiona todo lo relacionado con el branding, y tengo la suerte trabajar en ello.

Why did you choose the nickname @dirtyharry? Are you a big fan of the policeman played by Clint Eastwood?

In fact, I’m a musician. The only thing I have studied in my life at a professional level was a percussion career, but life has made me work on many things that are totally different from music. Although I have never left it, since I have a group called Clint with whom I have recorded 4 albums (you can listen to the last album here). Within the group we all have some kind of relationship with Inspector Harry Callahan, his films and Clint Eastwood, whom we admired since decades. Within Clint I am “Dirty Harry”, therefore when choosing my stage name or a nickname for Instagram I chose this one, and I use it for both music and lettering.

¿Porque elegiste nickname @dirtyharry? ¿Eres muy fan del policía encarnado por Clint Eastwood?

Realmente yo soy músico, lo único que he estudiado en mi vida a nivel profesional ha sido la carrera de percusión, pero la vida me ha hecho trabajar de muchas cosas cada vez más alejadas de la música, aunque nunca la he dejado, ya que tengo un grupo instrumental que se llama Clint con quien he grabado 4 discos (podéis escuchar el último disco aquí). Dentro del grupo todos tenemos alguna relación con el inspector Harry Callahan, sus películas y Clint Eastwood, al que veneramos desde hace décadas. Dentro de Clint soy “Dirty Harry”, de ahí que a la hora de elegir mi nombre artístico o un nickname para Instagram eligiera este, y lo uso tanto para la música como para el lettering.

How long have you been in the lettering “business”? How did you start?

I remember the day that I started with lettering very clearly. It was May 16th, 2012, which coincides with my birthday. Just a few days ago my neurologist recommended that I should start learning new things, things that I had never done before, because this creates new neural connections in the brain, since I have had a small memory problem for years. That day I bought myself a notebook, a pencil and a marker, and I decided that in the 12 minutes of going to- and in the 12 minutes of returning from work, I would draw while sitting in the train. I always wanted to draw and I always need to do new things, so I started without any expectations and without knowing what I was going to draw, although I have always been fascinated by typographies and I think that’s why I started making lettering.

¿Cuánto tiempo llevas en esto del lettering? ¿Cómo empezaste?

Es fácil recordar el día que empecé a hacer lettering, ya que comencé el 16 de mayo del 2012, que justamente coincide con el día de mi cumpleaños. Hacia unos días mi neurólogo me recomendó aprender cosas nuevas que nunca hubiera hecho, porque así se crean conexiones neuronales nuevas en el cerebro, ya que tengo un pequeño problema de memoria desde hace años. Ese día me compré una libreta, un lápiz y un rotulador, y decidí que en los 12 minutos de ida y en los 12 minutos de vuelta del trabajo, dibujaría sentado en el tren. Siempre había querido dibujar y necesitaba hacer cosas nuevas, así que empecé sin ninguna pretensión y sin saber que iba a dibujar, aunque siempre me han fascinado las tipografías y creo que por eso empecé a hacer lettering.

How much time do you spend on lettering each week?

I dedicate all the free time I have to lettering, which is not much, because in addition to my work, I have twins and the free time you have with two children is not much, but I always tell my students that 10 minutes is better than nothing, and if instead of 10 minutes you have 20, that’s even better. So I have learned to optimize time, to have a clear idea of what I want to draw, to sketch anywhere, and to think a lot ahead about the designs I want to make. The good thing is to never lose the habit of drawing and creating, because like everything, you train and improve with time and consistency. Those minutes a day that I dedicate to lettering are my “creative yoga”, you really disconnect from everything, you focus on the lines and you forget about everything. I recommend everyone to practice lettering in order to disconnect, that’s why a year ago I published a book that mixes mindfulness with lettering.

¿Cuánto tiempo le dedicas cada semana?

Le dedico el máximo tiempo que tengo, que no es mucho, porque además de mi trabajo, tengo mellizas y el tiempo libre que tienes con dos peques no es mucho, pero siempre les digo a mis alumnos que es mejor 10 minutos que nada, y si en vez de 10 minutos son 20 mejor que mejor. Así que he aprendido a optimizar mucho el tiempo, a tener muy claro lo que quiero hacer, a bocetar en cualquier lado, y a pensar mentalmente en los diseños que quiero hacer. Lo bueno es nunca perder el hábito de dibujar y crear, porque como todo, se entrena y se mejora con el tiempo y la constancia. Esos minutos al día que le saco al lettering son mi yoga creativo, verdaderamente desconectas de todo, te centras en el trazo y te olvidas de todo. Le recomiendo a todo el mundo practicar lettering para desconectar, de ahí que hace un año publiqué un libro que mezcla mindfulness con el lettering.

Do you think we could all learn its practice?

When I teach, I always say that all the students have the ability to draw as I do, since above all it’s a matter of practice, consistency and observation. I have never studied design or drawing and when I started I had no idea of technique or materials. I called what I was doing “typography drawing”, and it took some time until I found out that it was called “lettering”. To anyone who wants to start I always say that now there is a lot of info available on lettering, about techniques, materials, there are tutorials everywhere etc… and that they already start at a much better starting point than the one I had when I started, since there was no info available at that time. I think that if you want to learn, if you want to create beautiful things and to express yourself, I don’t see any reason not to end up drawing like I do. During this period of confinement, I have created a few tutorials myself on my Instagram profile to learn “False calligraphy” which is a very easy method of lettering to simulate calligraphy made with a brush. I recommend it if you want to learn the basics of lettering.

¿Crees que todos podríamos aprender su práctica?

Cuando doy clases siempre suelo decir que todos los alumnos que pueden llegar a dibujar como lo hago yo, ya que sobre todo es cuestión de práctica, constancia y observación. Yo nunca he estudiado diseño o dibujo, y cuando empecé no tenía ni idea de técnica, ni de materiales. A lo que hacía lo llamaba “dibujo de tipografías”, y tardé hasta que me enteré que eso era “lettering”. A cualquiera que quiera empezar siempre le digo que ahora hay mucha info alrededor del lettering, sobre técnicas, materiales, tutoriales etc… y que ya parten con un punto de partida mucho mejor que el que yo tenía cuando empecé, ya que no había nada de info por aquella época. Creo que, si tienes ganas de aprender, ganas de crear cosas bellas, y de expresarte no veo ninguna razón para no acabar dibujando como lo puedo hacer yo. Con esto del confinamiento, he creado unos pequeños tutoriales en mi perfil de Instagram para aprender “Falsa caligrafía” que es un método muy fácil de hacer lettering para simular la caligrafía hecha con un pincel. Os lo recomiendo si queréis aprender lettering muy básico.

What are the different styles of lettering? Any one in particular that you like the most?

The truth is that, if I’m honest, I don’t think there are different types of lettering. In the end, lettering is as simple as illustrating with typographies. The good thing about lettering is that it allows us to be free, we can twist, work and create the typographies that end up being a message with the tools and shapes that we want. Just as calligraphy has strict rules of execution, lettering is pure freedom of creation, where there are no rules and each one has its own personal style. Anyway, if I had to choose a form in which lettering makes much sense, it’s in Street art. I am a fan of Street art and its artists, and I am always taking photos of everything I see on the streets. Lettering and the street are the perfect match to amplify our message, since enormous walls can be used, such as the work created by @boamistura to fill up and decorate huge areas of cities.

¿Cuales son diferentes estilos de lettering? ¿Alguno en particular que más te guste?

La verdad es que, si te soy sincero, no creo que existan diferentes tipos de lettering, es decir, al final lettering es tan simple como ilustrar con tipografías. Lo bueno que tiene el lettering es que nos permite ser libres, podemos deformar, trabajar y crear las tipografías que componen un mensaje con las herramientas y formas que nos apetezca. Al igual que la caligrafía tiene unas normas estrictas de ejecución, el lettering es libertad pura de creación, donde no hay normas, y cada uno tiene su estilo personal. De todas formas, si tuviera que elegir una forma en la que el lettering creo que tiene mucho más sentido, es en el Street art. Soy un fanático del Street art y de sus artistas, y siempre estoy sacando fotos a todo lo que me encuentro por la calle. El lettering y la calle son el soporte perfecto para amplificar nuestro mensaje, ya que se pueden usar soportes enormes, como por ejemplo los trabajos que realizan @boamistura para intervenir zonas enormes en las ciudades.

Do your messages have a goal, a meaning, are they messages of social awareness?

Words are the most powerful weapon that society has, and in these troubled times I think it is vitally important. If you combine it with a good illustration, it becomes much more powerful and its power is much more amplified. It is said that an image is worth a thousand words, and I think that if you give a good phrase a good illustration or lettering, that phrase will be worth more than ten thousand words. I try to create sentences that reflect or motivate the mornings of our every day and I succeed to create conversations on my social walls where each one comments and gives his opinion regarding the topic. I really like that interactivity between author and follower that social networks provides us. Coming back the the previous topic, I believe that street art, is a form of direct contact with society, on a canvas that is the street and through which we all pass, and where everything is always happening. It makes society stop for a moment and reflect and rethink on what we are doing.

¿Tienen un objetivo, un significado o un mensaje de concienciación social?

La palabra es el arma más poderosa que tiene la sociedad, y en estos tiempos tan convulsos creo que tiene vital importancia. Si la conjugas con una buena ilustración esta se hace muchísimo más poderosa y su potencia se amplifica mucho más. Siempre se dice que una imagen vale más que mil palabras, y yo opino que si a una gran frase le das una buena ilustración o lettering esa frase valdrá más que diez mil palabras. Intento crear frases que cada día hagan reflexionar o motiven las mañanas de los demás y consigo crear conversaciones en mis muros sociales donde cada uno expone su criterio frente al tema que trato esa mañana. Me gusta mucho esa interactividad entre autor y seguidor que nos permite las redes sociales. Siguiendo con la reflexión y la motivación, creo que el street art como te decía en la anterior pregunta, es una forma de expresión directa con la sociedad, en un lienzo que es la calle y por el que todos pasamos, y donde tienen cabida todo tipo de acciones que hacen que la sociedad se pare y reflexione sobre lo que estamos haciendo.

What is your favorite creation?

Well, this question is difficult, because I am lucky that most of my work is created just for myself, and I don’t usually take many agency assignments, so I select my jobs very well. My works have a personal touch and are linked to vital moments that I have been living. Those are one of the reasons why almost most of them are created just for me.

But if I have to select something, I am very excited with all the work I have done for the Fundación uno entre cien mil, which is a foundation that I have collaborated with for more than a year doing various actions that try to raise funds for the study of leukemia in children. Several other projects I’ve worked on and I’m super proud of are “The true love Project” and “Los cordones dorados”. I love that my work is a small contribution to cure leukemia in children.

¿Cuál es tu creación favorita?

Pues esta pregunta es difícil, porque tengo la suerte de que la mayoría de mi trabajo lo hago para mí, y no suelo coger muchos encargos de agencias, así que selecciono muy bien mis trabajos. Por eso mis obras tienen un toque personal y están vinculadas a momentos vitales por los que he pasado. Esas es una de las razones por las que casi en la mayoría solo trabajo para mí.

Pero si tengo que seleccionar algo, últimamente estoy muy emocionado con todo el trabajo que he hecho para la Fundación uno entre cien mil, que es una fundación con la que colaboro desde hace más de un año haciendo varias acciones que intentan recaudar fondos para el estudio de la leucemia infantil. Varios de los proyectos en los que he trabajo y de los que estoy super orgulloso son“The true love Project” y “Los cordones dorados”. Me encanta que mi trabajo sea un pequeño grano de arena para intentar llegar a curar la leucemia infantil.

The three Lettering users you admire the most?

I am going to choose three Spanish calligraphers whom, in addition to meeting them personally, have always inspired me and from whom I learn every day by seeing their works. These calligraphers are:

Ivan castro (@ivancastrolettering): One of the most important international calligraphers. I love his personal style, and part of who I am is thanks to his learning and lessons. I love the passion you can see in all of his works and the love he has for calligraphy. As if this were not enough, he has the best manual on lettering and calligraphy that exists, and that I usually recommend to all my students.

Mr Zé (@mrzethecreator): About Félix Rodriguez I cannot say anything objectively, you just have to enter his profile to see the talent he has, and how he mixes urban art with calligraphy in a unique way. His works always inspire me and that’s why I recommend him. On top of everything, being a global calligraphy superstar, he’s close, friendly, and one of the best people I’ve known since I started on my Dirty Harry trail.

Jose Gil (@josegilq): Little by little, he has gained respect in the world of calligraphy. I always recommend his profile, loaded with words made with a brush. I have a very special relationship with José Gil, because we met at work, before we both got into lettering and calligraphy, and time has made us end up doing the same thing. He is one of those people who transmits creativity with everything he touches.

¿Los tres usuarios de Lettering que admiras más?

Voy a elegir a tres calígrafos españoles a los que además de conocer personalmente siempre me han servido de inspiración y de los que aprendo cada día viendo sus trabajos. Estos calígrafos son:

Ivan castro (@ivancastrolettering): Uno de los calígrafos más importantes a nivel internacional. Me encanta su estilo personal, y parte de lo que soy es gracias a sus aprendizajes y lecciones. Me encanta la pasión que imprime a todos sus trabajos y el amor que destila por la caligrafía. Por si esto no fuera poco, tiene el mejor manual sobre lettering y caligrafía que existe, y que suelo recomendarlo a todos mis alumnos.

Mr Zé (@mrzethecreator): De Félix Rodriguez no puedo decir nada de manera objetiva, solo tienes que entrar a su perfil para ver el talento que tiene, y como mezcla el arte urbano con la caligrafía de una manera única. Sus trabajos para mí son siempre inspiradores y por eso lo recomiendo. Además de todo, de ser una súper estrella de la caligrafía a nivel mundial, es cercano, amable, y es una de las mejores personas que he conocido desde que empecé el camino de Dirty Harry.

Jose Gil (@josegilq): Poco a poco se ha ido ganando el respeto en el mundo de la caligrafía. Siempre recomiendo su perfil, cargado de palabras hechas a pincel. Con José Gil tengo una relación muy especial porque los dos nos conocimos en mi trabajo, antes de que ambos hiciéramos lettering y caligrafía, y el tiempo nos ha hecho acabar haciendo lo mismo. Es una de esas personas que destilan creatividad con cada cosa que toca.
