Miss Beige, el antiselfie. Un proyecto multidisciplinar de la actriz, periodista y performer Ana Esmith. Nace en respuesta a la carencia de heroínas femeninas no sexualizadas o cosificadas en el imaginario colectivo. Surge como una heroína del siglo XXI, sin capa ni mallas ajustadas porque sabe que su vestido, cinturón, zapatos, guantes de color beige y un martillo saliendo de su bolso pueden destruir toda la vanidad que le rodea.

Born in response to the lack of female heroines not sexualized or reified in the collective imagination. Do Ana Esmith and Miss Beige have a certain look a-like?

Undoubtedly, that social vigilante that does not shut up when it comes to abuse of power, gender or flag. Miss Beige and I like to provoke and there are certain fields where provocation is more necessary than water. You have to laugh at it, it is the only way to litigate the corruption and the sheep around us. And yes, they both look a little bit like Robin Hood. Already at school, the teachers called me “the lawyer for the poor.”

Sin duda, esa justiciera social que no se calla ante los abusos de poder, género o bandera. A Miss Beige y a mí nos gusta provocar y hay ciertos campos donde la provocación es más necesaria que el agua. Hay que reírse de ellos, es la única forma de litigar la corrupción y el borreguismo que nos rodea. Y sí, ambas tienen un poquito de Robin Hood. Ya en el colegio los profesores me llamaban “la abogada de los pobres”.

In a world of filters you choose beige. Is there a message behind it?

More than a message there is a provocation. Beige is an insipid, impartial and unpopular shade, but according to its description in the dictionary, “it goes further because its presence alone softens other stronger shades.” In this way I intend to encourage reflection on the space that exists between what we are and the image of what we are supposed to be. A provocation in a society in which exacerbated narcissism is common, the hypertrophy of selfthought, as Lipovetsky said in “The era of emptiness”. We are so afraid of being rejected or that people will point at us, that we prefer to follow certain canons. We don’t mind being manipulated if that gives us a certain social acceptance. That is why Miss Beige challenges us and questions: And you, do you dare to be BEIGE?

En un mundo de filtros elegiste el beige. ¿Hay algún mensaje detrás?

Más que mensaje hay una provocación. El beige es una tonalidad insípida, imparcial y poco popular pero según su descripción en el diccionario ”va más allá porque con su sola presencia consigue suavizar a otras tonalidades más fuertes”. De esta forma pretendo alentar la reflexión sobre el espacio que existe entre lo que somos y la imagen de aquello que se supone que somos. Una provocación en una sociedad en la que lo común es un narcisismo exacerbado, la hipertrofia del yo, como decía Lipovetsky en “La era del vacío”. Tenemos tanto miedo a ser rechazados o apuntados con el dedo que preferimos seguir ciertos cánones. No nos importa ser manipulados si eso nos otorga una cierta aceptación social. Por eso Miss Beige nos desafía y cuestiona: Y tú, ¿te atreves a ser BEIGE?

Have you ever thought about changing your tone / shade / color?

No. There are many shades of beige that contain a purity that is not allowed. Everyone shows off and says it’s looking for and wanting “the authentic”, but few dare to be or experience it. It requires a lot of value and society does not allow it, therefor being different causes a lot of distress and pain.

¿Has llegado a pensar algún día en cambiar de tono?

No. Hay muchas tonalidades de beige que conllevan un pureza que no está permitida. Todo el mundo presume de buscar y querer “lo auténtico” pero pocos se atreven a serlo o experimentarlo. Exige mucho valor y la sociedad no nos lo permite por eso la diferencia causa tanta desazón y escozor.

The wardrobes of influencers are infinite. How many dresses do you have?

Do you dress “casual” on the weekends?

Miss Beige wears the same dress, the same bag, within it: the same hammer, every day, even when she is invited to the front row of Madrid Fashion Week.

¿Los fines de semana vas “casual”?

Miss Beige lleva todos los días el mismo vestido, el mismo bolso y el mismo martillo incluso cuando es invitada al front row de Madrid Fashion Week.

Your bag is your favorite accessory, any other one that does not appear in the photos?

No, what you see is what there is.

No, lo que ves es lo que es.

Will we see you again at Arco in 2021?

Well, right now I am trying to make sense of 2020 without haste, but without pause. Arco is once a year, but there are another 364 days ahead.

¿Volverás a trabajar en Arco en el 2021?

Pues, ahora mismo estoy intentado darle sentido al 2020 así que sin prisa pero sin pausa. Arco es una vez al año, pero hay otros 364 días por delante.

Do you have any other “provoc-actions” in mind?

I have actions in mind that lead to an urgent need to return to the classics and with it a reflection on the human being after everything that happened with the covid-19.

¿Tienes alguna otra “provoc-acción” en mente?

Tengo acciones en mente que conllevan una necesidad imperiosa de volver a los clásicos y con ello a una reflexión sobre el ser humano tras todo lo ocurrido con el covid-19.

Tell us about the Miss Beige community and their get-togethers. Do you speak?

Well, it is the most satisfying experience I have ever experienced as a performer. The only rule is to stay in the group without dispersing, but the energy produced, the feeling of freedom and the spirit of community are incredible, without saying a single word, of the participants own free will.

Cuéntanos sobre esa comunidad de Miss Beige y sus quedadas ¿Habláis?

Pues es la experiencia más satisfactoria que he experimentado como performer. La única regla es permanecer en el grupo sin dispersarse, pero la energía que se produce, la sensación de libertad y el espíritu de comunidad son increíbles, sin decir una sola palabra, por voluntad propia de los participantes.

What is the first thing you will do when we get to the “new normal”?

Well, I was baptized as “the heroine of normality” and I was always proud of that nickname. I am not in a hurry to get to the new normality, but in any case “we” will be there trying to make the world a better place.

¿Qué es lo primero que harás cuando llegue la “nueva normalidad”?

Bueno, a mí me bautizaron como “la heroína de la normalidad” y siempre estuve orgullosa de ese apodo. No tengo prisa por la nueva normalidad pero sea como sea estaremos ahí intentando hacer que el mundo sea un lugar mejor.
