Travel specialist photographer. He completed his Master in Documentary Photography in 2007. He has been a daily contributor for “20 Minutes” newspaper in Spain and usually collaborates with top-tier companies and institutions such as the Indonesian Ministry of Tourism, Canon Spain, Disney, Coca Cola, Intercontinental Hotels and Sanitas, among others. An inveterate traveler, the number of countries he has visited now stands at 58. His work has been exhibited in places such as Miami Art Basel or the Pimentel Palace in Valladolid. His Instagram account has more than 253,000 followers who enjoy his best snapshots and dozens of trips.

Fotógrafo especializado en viajes. Finalizó su Máster en Fotografía Documental en 2007. Ha sido colaborador en el diario “20 minutos” y colabora habitualmente con empresas de primer nivel e instituciones como el Ministerio de Turismo de Indonesia, Canon España, Disney, Coca Cola, Hoteles Intercontinental y Sanitas entre otros. Viajero empedernido, el número de países que ha visitado asciende ya a 58. Su obra ha sido expuesta en salas como la Miami Art Basel y en el Palacio de Pimentel de Valladolid. Su cuenta de Instagram cuenta con más de 253.000 seguidores que pueden descubrir sus mejores instantáneas de sus decenas de viajes.

¿Cuéntanos algo de David Rocaberti que no sepamos por Instagram?

La verdad es que suelo ser bastante hermético con respecto a mi vida privada en las redes sociales, pero estoy empezando a ser consciente de que voy a tener que mostrar mucho más de mi de lo que tenía pensado, porque a la gente le gusta “ponerme cara “.

Una de las muchas cosas que no saben de mi por Instagram, es que hace unos años dejé la comodidad de ser el dueño de un próspero negocio familiar a cambio de perseguir el sueño de convertir mi pasión en mi trabajo a tiempo completo. Pienso que todo el mundo debería hacer todo lo posible por perseguir sus sueños, pero también soy consciente de lo que cuesta dar el paso. A mí me llevó varios años el tomar la decisión y otros tres, el hecho de poder llevarlo a cabo, pero no me he arrepentido ni un sólo momento.

At what age did you take your first photo? Do you remember?

My first memory with a camera is with an Agfa camera, the typical “point and shoot” of that time, which I got on the day of my First Communion, the day that I turned 8 years old. I still remember like it was yesterday when my grandfather told “hold your breath when shooting” when I unpacked it and I started shooting like crazy, without even a film inside 🙂

¿A qué edad sacaste tu primera foto? ¿Lo recuerdas? 

Mi primer recuerdo con una cámara de fotos es con una Agfa, la típica “point and shoot” de la época, que me regalaron el día de mi Primera Comunión, exactamente el día que cumplía 8 años. Aún recuerdo como si fuera ayer a mi abuelo diciéndome que contuviera la respiración al disparar cuando la saqué de la caja y me puse a disparar como un loco, sin siquiera haber puesto un carrete dentro :)..

With which brands of cameras do you like to shoot?

I have been working mainly with Canon for years, although I have also used Olympus equipment on several occasions and have even done campaigns for mobile devices brands too. At the end, the camera does not make the photographer, but it is true that you get on habit with the equipment you are using.

¿Con qué marca de cámaras te sientes más cómodo?

Llevo unos cuantos años trabajando mayoritariamente con Canon aunque también he usado en diversas ocasiones equipo Olympus e incluso he hecho campañas para marcas de teléfonos móviles. Al final la cámara no hace al fotógrafo, pero es cierto que hay que adaptarse al equipo que estás usando en cada momento.

And mobile phones?

I am quite comfortable with Apple devices, although lately I have worked with Alcatel and Huawei with pretty good results.

¿Y de móviles?

Me siento bastante cómodo con dispositivos Apple, aunque últimamente he trabajado con Alcatel y Huawei con resultados bastante buenos.

Outside the context of this pandemic, how many days a year did you use to travel?

I usually spent about 3 months a year “from home” and in 2020 I would have traveled a lot more if it had not been for this virus. In fact, the beginning of the pandemic caught me by surprise working in the northern part of Norway and I had to cancel half of the trip and stayed confined in a cabin for a while, as a preventive measure, before I was allowed to return to Spain.

Fuera del contexto de esta pandemia, ¿cuántos días al año solías viajar?

Suelo pasar fuera unos 3 meses al año y en 2020 habría viajado bastante más si no hubiera sido por el dichoso virus. De hecho, el principio de la pandemia me pilló trabajando en el norte de Noruega y tuve que suspender la mitad del viaje y quedarme confinado en una cabaña como medida preventiva, antes de que me autorizaran a volver a España.

What are your two or three favourite destinations and which of them would you like to visit again for taking photos?

The truth is that I usually enjoy all the places I visit, but I have always thought that Iceland is the Disneyland of photographers, because of the density of impressive sites that it has on such a small island. I was planning to go back there in September, but the virus got in my way. Other places I would love to see again are Lapland, Patagonia, and Indonesia.

¿Cuales son tus dos o tres destinos favoritos y a cuál de ellos volverías para sacar más fotos?

La verdad es que suelo disfrutar bastante de todos los lugares que visito pero siempre he pensado que Islandia es la Disneylandia de los fotógrafos por la densidad de sitios impresionantes que tiene en una isla tan pequeña. En mis planes estaba el haber vuelto por allí en septiembre, pero el virus se interpuso en mi camino. Otros lugares a los que siempre me gusta volver son Laponia, Patagonia e Indonesia.

You “capture” many skies, do they have any special meaning for you?

In any type of outdoor photography, the sky greatly marks the final result. I really like the drama that a good storm or evening sky with clouds brings, but also the night sky, how overwhelming it seems compared to a simple and plain human being.

Fotografías muchos cielos, ¿tienen algún significado especial para ti?

En cualquier tipo de fotografía al aire libre, el cielo marca enormemente el resultado final. Me gusta mucho el dramatismo que aporta un buen cielo de tormenta o de atardecer con nubes, pero también el nocturno, con lo apabullante que parece en comparación a un simple y llano ser humano.

How did this passion for night photography start?

Many years ago I was a student of David Alan Harvey and he gave me an advice that I have followed ever since: base your work on a subject in which you feel comfortable. I can not explain very well why, but I find myself very comfortable alone at night in the middle of nowhere and in absolute darkness. On the other hand, I have always found fascination for the ability of photography to accumulate light through long exposures and show the world what we are not able to see with our own eyes.

¿Cómo surgió esa afición por la fotografía nocturna?

Hace muchos años fui alumno de David Alan Harvey y me dio un consejo que siempre he seguido a rajatabla: basa tu trabajo en un tema en el que te encuentres cómodo. No sabría explicar muy bien el porqué, pero me encuentro muy cómodo yo solo de noche en medio de la nada y en la oscuridad absoluta. Por otro lado, siempre me ha parecido fascinante la capacidad que tiene la fotografía de poder acumular luz mediante largas exposiciones y mostrar mundos que no somos capaces de ver con nuestros propios ojos.

What is your favorite photo until now?

If I had to choose a photograph, I would probably stick with a nocturnal one that I took in the lavender fields of Guadalajara. It’s probably due to the fact that the place was then quite unknown and that I had that photo in my head for a long time, but getting to capture exactly what I wanted was really satisfying.

¿Cuál es tu foto favorita hasta la fecha?

Si tuviera que elegir una fotografía, probablemente me quedaría con una nocturna que hice en los campos de lavanda de Brihuega en Guadalajara. Probablemente sea por el hecho de que el lugar era entonces bastante desconocido y que tenía esa foto en la cabeza desde hacía mucho tiempo pero el conseguir plasmar exactamente lo que pretendía, fue realmente satisfactorio.

Apart from the Instagramers Gallery at the Espacio Fundación Telefónica de Madrid, what emblematic places have exhibited your photos?

The best place where I have exhibited has undoubtedly been Miami, in 2012, within the framework of the Art Miami Basel fair, although I felt more comfortable and much closer to the public at La Sala El Brocense de Cáceres in 2011 and at El Palacio de Pimentel in 2016.

Aparte de la Instagramers Gallery en la Espacio Fundación Telefónica de Madrid ¿Qué lugares emblemáticos han acogido tus fotos?

El mejor lugar donde he expuesto ha sido sin duda Miami, en 2012, en el marco de la feria Art Miami Basel, aunque me sentí más cómodo y muchísimo más cercano al público en La Sala El Brocense de Cáceres en 2011 y en El Palacio de Pimentel en 2016.

Any photography award that makes you feel proud?

Because of its magnitude, the Sustainable Tourism Award from the Government of Indonesia in 2019 was a very special moment. This year, 2020, I have received the IATI award too and I was very surprised as it means a lot in Spain.

¿Algún premio de fotografía o certamen que te haga sentirte orgulloso?

Por su magnitud, el premio al Turismo Sostenible del Gobierno de Indonesia en 2019 fue un momento muy especial. Este año 2020 he recibido también el premio IATI y me hizo muchísima ilusión por lo inesperado y por lo que significa a nivel nacional.

Can you tell us something about your next projects?

I have a couple of very interesting projects. On the one hand, I am working on a book that is going to be called “Arctic”, in which apart from showing my best works from my travels to the north, I am going to share all my experiences there; I will explain everything you need to known before organising an expedition to Swedish Lapland, Norway and also Iceland. I will include practical advices on the trip itself and technical tips on how to photograph “up north” and specifically… the northern lights (Aurora Borealis).

On the other hand, when we manage to reverse the current pandemic situation that unfortunately we have live with, I will begin to organize photographic trips to destinations that seem very interesting to me (Greenland, New Zealand, Iceland, Chile …), in which, apart from reviewing theoretical concepts, I am going to focus mainly on the practical part. In other words, those who have the “courage” to accompany me will experience theirselves what it takes to get a good travel report to be proud of.

¿Puedes contarnos algo de tus próximos proyectos?

Tengo un par de proyectos muy interesantes. Por un lado, estoy empezando a trabajar en un libro que se va a llamar “Ártico”, en el cual aparte de mostrar mis mejores trabajos en mis viajes por el norte, voy a narrar mis experiencias allí; básicamente voy a contar todo lo que me habría gustado que hubieran contado a mi antes de hacer una expedición a Laponia sueca, la noruega y también en Islandia. Voy a incluir consejos prácticos sobre el viaje en sí y técnicos sobre cómo fotografiar por esos lares y en particular a la Aurora Boreal.

.Por otro lado, cuando logremos revertir la actual situación de pandemia actual, voy a empezar a organizar viajes fotográficos a destinos que me parecen muy interesantes (Groenlandia, Nueva Zelanda, Islandia, Chile…), en los cuales, aparte de repasar conceptos teóricos, voy a incidir mayormente en la parte práctica. En otras palabras, los que tengan el “valor” de acompañarme, van experimentar en sí mismos todo lo que hay que hacer para conseguir un buen reportaje de viajes del que sentirse orgulloso.
